AO3 Dark Mode is a browser extension built with privacy as a core design principle. This page explains exactly what the extension does and does not do with your information.

In short: AO3 Dark Mode does not collect, store, transmit, or sell any personal data. It has no analytics, no remote servers, and no access to your AO3 account credentials.

1. What the extension does

AO3 Dark Mode changes the visual appearance of pages on archiveofourown.org using CSS and JavaScript that runs entirely inside your own browser. It reads the structure of the page you are viewing only to apply theme styling — it does not read, log, or transmit the content of that page anywhere.

2. Data we do not collect

We do not collect your AO3 username, password, or account details.
We do not read or store the content of works, comments, or bookmarks you view.
We do not use analytics, tracking pixels, or third-party advertising scripts.
We do not sell, rent, or share any data, because none is collected.

3. What is stored, and where

Your theme choice and reading preferences (such as font size, reading width, and brightness) are saved using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage API. This data:

Stays on your own device (or syncs privately through your own Google account, if Chrome Sync is enabled on your browser — the extension itself does not access this data remotely).
Is never sent to any server operated by us, because we do not operate any server.
Can be cleared at any time by removing the extension or clearing your browser's extension storage.

4. Permissions the extension requests

AO3 Dark Mode only requests access to archiveofourown.org and the storage permission needed to remember your settings. It does not request access to any other website, your browsing history, your downloads, or your clipboard.

5. Third parties

AO3 Dark Mode does not integrate with any third-party analytics, advertising, or data-processing service. No data leaves your browser as a result of using this extension.

6. Children's privacy

Since AO3 Dark Mode does not collect any personal information from any user, it does not knowingly collect information from children either.

7. Changes to this policy

If this policy is ever updated, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will change. Continued use of the extension after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
